REVIEW:
In "A Rare Vintage,"
Saunders and Caje go above-and-beyond to rescue a wounded Hanley from a German-occupied
winery. This is a great episode for Morrow and Jalbert, not so much for Jason, who is
primarily used as a prop.
Saunders goes to near-super human effort trying to get medicine and succor to Hanley.
He does not quite leap tall buildings in a single bound, but he makes a ten-foot jump
across balconies. Caje again risks being shot as a spy when he dons civilian clothes to
pass himself off as the crippled grandson of the vintner. Sutton Roley shows what an
expert, creative lensman he is. He offers some stunning dolly shots and remarkable camera
zooms. A long camera shot, that zooms tightly into a closeup of Saunders hiding in the
bushes, is particularly striking.
NOTES, ODDITIES, AND BLOOPERS:
· The German tests to see if Caje's right hand is really
crippled by seeing if he can catch something in his left. Since actor Jalbert, is a
south-paw, this was not too difficult.
· A wimpy interrogation scene:
after Hanley tells the German captain to "Get Lost," the captain actually
leaves, saying that he'll find some way to make him talk. This German, for some reason,
did not think of slapping him around for the information.
· When Saunders and Caje come
into the wine room, as they lean over Hanley, a camera man's shadow falls across the
left-hand side of the shot.
