When did you first watch COMBAT!:
KOMO-TV Seattle circa 1963. Reruns of the program weren't shown in Seattle until 1986. They were run again briefly (black and white only) last year.
Why do you enjoy watching COMBAT!:
As a kid, it made me understand about good and evil. It was a complement to "Sgt. Fury" (read by the boys) and "Diary of Anne Frank" (read by the girls).
Share your COMBAT! memories:
In the 4th grade (1964-65) I used to walk home for lunch with one of the girls in my class. On Wednesdays we would discuss the previous evening's Combat! episode.
More COMBAT! memories:
My mother cried while watching the episode where the young girl (a student nurse) who saves Saunders is later killed by a mine. This ran sometime around 1964 and I still remember my mom's reaction. I saw the episode many years later as an adult and was moved by it.
Comments about web site:
Was wondering whatever became of Pierre Jalbert. Never knew if he was really a Cajun or a Quebecker. Enjoyed the character sketches and the biographies of the actual actors.

When did you first watch COMBAT!:
The first time was around 1977. A Chicago station aired episode every Sunday morning at 11:00 and every Saturday afternoon at 5:00. I did not see the ahow again until I was flipping through channels one Thursday morning about twenty years later. (Encore/MPlex)
Why do you enjoy watching COMBAT!:
Just a great show period.
Share your COMBAT! memories:
The one episode that comes to mind was "Hills Are for Heroes" in which the tank approaches the pillbox on the hill. Have not watched that episode in over 22 years.
More COMBAT! memories:
A mixture of authentic equipment with non-authentic 'Sherman' tanks.

When did you first watch COMBAT!:
Right from the very beginning, in 1962 (I was all of 11). It occasionally pops up on some of the local stations and I've managed to tape several, but not all of the shows I remember are shown.
Why do you enjoy watching COMBAT!:
Many of my relatives were involved in the Service during the war, including both parents, four uncles and my grandmother. And a lot of the kids I grew up with came from war time marriages (Japanese, German, Italian, and French, mostly) so the War was a topic not so distant timewise or otherwise from our everyday life.
Share your COMBAT! memories:
My dad was from Louisiana, so any tv or movie character who purported to be from La. interested me. Even though my dad was not from a part of French La., I did have cousins in Cajun country, and Caje's accent wasn't quite right. Not that it mattered a fig because I was madly in love with him anyway. The skiing bit, while I enjoyed, it was something of a stretch to believe, though, sinc Louisiana doesn't even have a decent-sized hill. But again, no matter. He could have claimed to be Danish

Comments about web site:
I came across this site totally by accident and was amazed that so many people still remember the series. What I find interesting is that the stars' still keep in touch with each other. Seems so different from today's apparent attitudes. I am impressed with this site, and I actually (finally! after more than 30 years) found out how old some of the guys were when the show was done. It mattered a great deal when I was 11 or 12, though it's hardly important now! Curiosity, I guess, more than

When did you first watch COMBAT!:
I was first introduced to Combat! by my mother, Susan when Nostalgia Network ran the entire series a few years ago. Been hooked ever since.
Why do you enjoy watching COMBAT!:
It has a certain realizm that no other show had. The acting was second to none, it tackled touchy subject matter, and THE GUEST STARS!
Share your COMBAT! memories:
I fell in love with the show throughmy mother who watched the show when it originally aired. She was lucky enough to go on a cruise with the cast.
More COMBAT! memories:
While on the cruise she aquired Rick Jason's autograph for me, and mingled with the guys.

When did you first watch COMBAT!:
I believe that I must have been about six or seven years old when I first watched COMBAT! The first episode that I noticed was "The Long Way Home, Part One".
Why do you enjoy watching COMBAT!:
Ever since I was a child, I have been very interested in the Second World War in Europe. I believe that COMBAT! was the very first war series that I ever watched. Although other Second World War tv series would eventually show up, like THE RAT PATROL, 12 O'CLOCK HIGH, GARRISON'S GORILLAS, THE GALLANT MEN, HOGAN'S HEROES, BAA BAA BLACK SHEEP/BLACK SHEEP SQUADRON, and THE DIRTY DOZEN, I have always considered COMBAT! as my favorite, precisely because it is the most effective in dealing with hum

I remember how I would look forward every Saturday at 8 p.m. to watch COMBAT! in our local channel 7, which also had the best reception of all free channels in the Philippines at that time. Since we only had a black-and-white television set at that time, all the five seasons looked the same to us, even when the fifth had the "in color" subtitle under the COMBAT! heading. I only got to see the fifth season of COMBAT! in color way after I finished my bachelor's degree. Although I and my cousin
More COMBAT! memories:
After the People's Power Revolution in February 1986, COMBAT! was briefly aired once again in Channel 2. Although this would not last until the end of the year, I appreciated it far more as a college graduate for the human experiences portrayed rather than for just the fighting, which was usually the basis for my childhood attraction to it. By the time RJTV 29 "Timeless Television" aired COMBAT! once again, from July 1995 to early 1996, I was even more able to appreciate COMBAT!, because I ha

When I found this web site after RJTV 29 stopped airing COMBAT! in early 1996, it was such an ocean of information that I nearly drowned in it. Practically all of the questions I had about the COMBAT! series were answered and, in addition to that, even more information, over and above what I ever dreamed of, could be found in this homepage. It was a great personal honor for me to be able to do some translation from German to English for Jo Davidsmeyer, the homepage keeper, precisely because I

I started watching right from the beginning in 1962. When WNEW TV started the saturday reruns and late night rerun I audio taped the episodes (before vcrs) Now thanks to begging, borrowind and buying I have the episodes to watch.
Why do you enjoy watching COMBAT!:
My father was Korean War infantry and an early interest in WWII got me hooked on it. The characters became in a sense friends and much of the attitude of the show showing how to be a man and stand up for yourself always carried a place in my heart and soul

Comments about web site:
Have enjoyed the site since 1996 along with the email disscussions. Would like to see a mass effort on our part to get Columbia House through either Worldvision or ABC-Tv to release this series as a collectors edition. Its amazing some of the crap they are releasing and a quality show that so much to so may lay idle...LONG LIVE COMBAT!

I started watching Combat in it's second or third season. I would watch it with my dad and sister.

One morning several years ago I turned on the PLex channel on cable and found Combat. So I would tape it every Thursday morning and watch it after school. Then it went off Plex. Several months later we changed cable and found Action Channel and taped it every day.Watching the show brought me back to the 60's and watching with my dad who has passed on.My son watches it with me know and loves Little John.He really enjoys it because of being in JR ROTC in high school.

When did you first watch COMBAT!:
I started watching Combat in the late 60's and early 70's when local station WNEW channel 5 aired reruns of the show every Saturday around the time Combat first went into syndication.
Why do you enjoy watching COMBAT!:
I love the characters. Theres not many shows where you actually develope a bond with a character but you feel like the guys from Combat are close friends or even relatives. Also, the writing is superb, the action is real and exciting. I have always said this was the best and most underrrated show in TV history.
Share your COMBAT! memories:
Just how much we as kids looked forward to watching the show every saturday. We would drop what we were doing, run home and watch the show and then come back out and play Combat. There were many arguments about who would be Sgt. Saunders. I still love the show to this day!
More COMBAT! memories:
Kirby has always been my favorite. I loved that BAR and his left-handed shooting style. Besides the fact that he was funny and always dependable when it counted. Besides, he reminds me so much of my Uncle who is a Vietnam Veteran. The walk, the talk, the mannerisms, that's my Uncle!

I grew up without TV. I started watching TV regularly at the late age of 23! I began watching Combat last year, researching Kevin Coughlin's life and death. He appeared in two episodes: Off Limits and The First Day. I contributed to a website in his memory: http://www.geocities.com/~childactors/ivanbeshkov.html If you can add to his memory, please contact me. Thanks.

Why do you enjoy watching COMBAT!:
My dad was in the 12th Armoured Division in WWII. My brothers and I would watch the program with dad. The episodes would spur many memories for my dad about the war. He would share some of those with us. Watching combat even in those early years of TV portrayed combat from a humanistic point of view without all the blood and gore of todays film makers.

When did you first watch COMBAT!:
I first discovered Combat in 1995.
Why do you enjoy watching COMBAT!:
I'd like to add one more thing : Combat is among the best series ever made in the 60's decade. Without forgetting shows like : The twilight zone, The untouchables, Danger man, Thriller, The avengers, The outer limits, The wild wild west, Mission : impossible, The time tunnel, The invaders, The prisoner. Combat is fascinating because it's all about the analysis of man's behaviour patterns in a situation of high-anxiety.
Share your COMBAT! memories:
One of my favourite black and white episode remains "Masquerade" with James Coburn as the savage, ruthless, sadistic, predatory beast, slick and sly, stubborn Cpl. Arnold Kanger aka the German spy. I like his raw face and his mean manners. Anyway, I like the bad guys of the show. The cameraworks are just fine to understand the character of Kanger with long dolly shots and extreme close-ups to his face. Here's a good example of an episode who deals with espionage.
More COMBAT! memories:
I'd like to add others great actors from Combat : 1) Lee Marvin 2) Richard Basehart 3) Fritz Weaver 4) Skip Homeier 5) James Daly 6) Robert Culp

When did you first watch COMBAT!:
By chance, I discovered Combat in 1995.
Why do you enjoy watching COMBAT!:
Combat is a tough, terse, realistic and stylish tv show with a great director ("Robert Altman"), great actors ("Jeffrey Hunter, James Coburn, Robert Duvall") and a great composer ("Leonard Rosenman"). That's why I like Combat.
Share your COMBAT! memories:
My best Combat episode is "The gantlet". This episode is fascinating because it's all about paranoia, hallucinations and twisted visions. Great cinematography and sound effects all the way. The" traitor" character ("Tom Skerrit") and the question of the false identity are exciting too.
More COMBAT! memories:
Above all, I like the black and white episodes because it's more dramatic .

Even given the limitations of TV, it presented WWII as realistically as possible. The Germans were not depicted as completely evil and Americans were not always the good guys. Best of all, war is not presented like a glorious adventure (John Wayne style) but as ugly although necessary in the case of WWII.

When did you first watch COMBAT!:
When COMBAT first ran on ABC in the early '60's. Watched it every Tuesday night with my brother (we are both Baby Boomers!) My dad would bowl on Tuesday nights. When he came home, he would tell us how he did and we would tell him what happened on COMBAT that night.
Why do you enjoy watching COMBAT!:
My dad was a WW II vet. I had a keen interest in U.S. history and World War II. The action. The sounds. The French and German spoken gave it a sense of reality. And there was NOBODY cooler than Sgt. Saunders . . . the way he walked . . . his facial idiosyncracies . . . his total commitment to getting the job done . . . and his Thompson Sub Machine Gun!!
Share your COMBAT! memories:
I have, for years, wanted to see repeats of the show. My brother bought me a couple of videos that were available a few years ago. When PLEX began showing re-runs . . . the excitement of my youth returned for a couple of hours. Odd though, when I watched the re-runs it was as if I had never seen them before. But how can I forget "Caje, take the point," or Kirby's BAR or the great music that followed the exposion of artillery shells in the intro.
More COMBAT! memories:
I loved the show so much that one year for Christmas, Santa Claus gave me a COMBAT Set (men, tanks, planes, etc.). . . I was into army men in the 50's and 60's. I still have remnants of that set today. The Box the set came in was red with COMBAT! written on top with the upraise bayonets in the backround just like on the show. It made the show come to life as I could act out what I had seen on Tuesday evenings on TV.
Comments about web site:
Great to see that there are other people who have the same memories as I do. That we share the same perspectives of something as simple as a TV show . . . what I was watching and the musings that ran through my mind were no different than others over 30 years ago.

Four years ago, when I was fourteen, I discovered reruns on a local channel. I told my dad I had found this black-and-white army show. Of course, he instantly recognized it, since he had watched it as a kid. We taped about 60 eps, which I now cherish.
Why do you enjoy watching COMBAT!:
The scripts are good, the acting is better, and the guys have such a high hubba-hubba factor!!! I've been nuts about WW2 as long as I can remember, since Dad brought us kids up on the good old movies. "Combat!" is a mini war movie that's incredibly clean!
Share your COMBAT! memories:
My brother and I once made a pact that neither of us would watch an episode without the other one, unless we'd both already seen it. Even though he's almost five years younger than I am, we're very close. We used to play "Combat!" a lot in our backyard. We were both sergeants that were under Hanley's command and friends with Saunders...

Everyone I've met on the e-mail list is awesome, and incredibly dedicated. So nice to know there are other "Combat"ants out there! :-)
Comments about web site:
Like I said, this is the greatest! The pictures are tantalizing, the info is well-presented, and the whole thing is totally fun!

When did you first watch COMBAT!:
I would have been eight. I remember that just as I was getting interested in the show, it stopped being shown in my small town.
Why do you enjoy watching COMBAT!:
I love the characters and the stories are timeless. I like the fact that the enemy is not always portrayed as evil although they never seem to shoot straight.
Share your COMBAT! memories:
I watch the show faithfully each weekday morning work or no work. I work in a electronics store with 20 Sony TVs on every day. When Combat is on each set shows off how well they can broadcast black and white. My boss doesn't like the show as the frequent gunfire irritates him but he allows me my one daily passion.

I am always facinated by WWII. My mother was an English War Bride so I owe may very existence to a war!

When did you first watch COMBAT!:
The very first episode in 1962. It was the most popular show in our family at that time. I had a big crush on Kirby. He seemed like exactly the kind of man a girl could hope to have as a sweetheart - he was so natural when he got into trouble (often) and love the girls. But he was still strong and loyal and good looking.
Why do you enjoy watching COMBAT!:
We are now getting COMBAT on Sci-Fi Channel - Satellite - and the episodes seem even more real because of all the very talented actors. Litteljohn is a big lovable guy even tho gambling is his weakness, Caje is so charming with his accent and dependability, Doc is sincere and can strong-arm the enemy when need-be. Of course Lt. Hanley is the one who cracks the whip and does it so well but is still fair (and handsome) and Sgt. Saunders (our hero) is sort of aloof but will go the last mile for
Share your COMBAT! memories:
My family and I love all the episodes but the one "The Convict" was our favorite in the 60's. Gilbert Roland is one of the best actors ever in movies and when Sgt. Saunders figured out who he was it was so real. The locale used was so real - we never knew where it was filmed back then and the train was fantastic
More COMBAT! memories:
I remember when one of the episodes was directed by Vic Morrow he had Lt. Hanley wounded in it. My mother was a die-hard Rick Jason fan and she got mad when Lt. Hanley was wounded. She wanted him to have a long furlough and recuperate in a hospital with a pretty nurse to take care of him. I recognized even back then just what top quality film work this series was and the actors who were all so believable. We could have sworn they were real soldiers!

When did you first watch COMBAT!:
Back in 1963 on ABC 7:30 PM, I was 8 years old.
Why do you enjoy watching COMBAT!:
Combat isn't just about battle, it's about human values. Never leave a man behind, tell the truth, do the right thing. And watching now at 43 years old I can see where my values came from. Today kids have NO place to see that type of show... just killing and laughing it up. That NEVER happened on Combat.
Share your COMBAT! memories:
I think that every boy during that time thought that they wanted the Sarge for a dad.
More COMBAT! memories:
A better bunch of actors has never been assembled to put on such a values oriented show that was not preachy and it was entertaining. You just cared for the characters.
Comments about web site:
Great site, add a link to the Dick Peabody memories sight. That is a great place to learn about the show.

When did you first watch COMBAT!:
I started watching Combat with my dad when it came on cable. He watched it when he was a kid, and well, I might just be a bigger fan than he is.
Why do you enjoy watching COMBAT!:
The real reason is my dad and I like watching to see Sgt. Saunders using his Thompson, because Saunders is the man.
Share your COMBAT! memories:
Nothing really, just enjoy watching it, and seeing Saunders, Doc, Kirby and rest.
More COMBAT! memories:
I guess I'm one the younger guys, I was born in 1982, but a fan til the death.
Comments about web site:
The web site is the best about Combat, with lots of info about Sgt. Saunders, they could get more about Saunders, but a good over all site.

There is great action and realistic weapons, with an interesting story line and a wonderful cast.

I loved to watch the show, and afterwards, I would get my Mattel Tommy Gun that looked just like Saunder's, (I also had a green camoflage Mattel Tommy Gun, just like the brown and black one)I had 3 good friends who also loved the show and we would go out on patrol and have running battles around the house.
More COMBAT! memories:
I still have my Mattel Tommy Gun and my Combat coloring book. Now my 9 year old son watches Combat and plays with my old tommy gun. I also have my Marx plastic German army helmet and Luger, that I used to play Combat with, so that we could have a realistic kraut enemy to shoot.
Comments about web site:
This is a fabulous site, with a wealth of information about the shows that I never knew. I enjoyed reading about the cast of Combat and what they are doing today. Keep up the great work, with the shows in re-runs, there is a new generation of kids who love the show as much as I did, and still do!

When did you first watch COMBAT!:
I not exactly sure, but I think it was the 2nd season--I was 6 years old.
Why do you enjoy watching COMBAT!:
I have always enjoyed war films, but I am very fond of the comraderie that was obvious among the squad. Watching the shows, now, brings me back to my childhood.
Share your COMBAT! memories:
I used to pretend that I was a member of the squad--even though I am a girl. I had a crush on the Sarge and Caje and they always looked out for me!! (OK, I was a kid!)I used my mother's kitchen broom as my gun. I even asked for a helmut for Christmas one year!

I started watching it when I was five during its original run.
Why do you enjoy watching COMBAT!:
The stories! It was so wonderful to rediscover the show as an adult and discover that the stories that so moved me as a child had an even greater meaning when I was an adult. The stories are timeless!

I couldn't wait for Tuesday nights to watch the latest episodes. Wednesdays after school, the other neighborhood kids and I would recreate the episode. We fought many a backyard battle in our neighborhood. Alas, as a "girl," I was at first relegated to playing the nurse and treating the various wounds of the boys. But eventually I liberated my older brother's Big Bang Cannon (a wonderfully deadly toy that used real gunpowder to create a horrendously loud noise ... certainly could never be
