Machine guns in WWII
US Army

A machine gun is an automatic weapon using small arms ammunition for rapid, continuous firing.

Two .30 caliber light machine guns were part of each weapons platoon. Eight heavy machine guns were part of each heavy weapons platoon.

On Combat!, the squad carries the .30 caliber machine gun into battle in a few episodes ("Point of View", "Hills are for Heroes"). Machine guns are operated by a crew of soldiers.

Types of Machine Guns:

bullet Light machine guns are usually used as offensive weapons against personnel. They are mobile and can be carried by a squad during an attack. The come equipped with bipods and were generally magazine fed and are air cooled.

bulletMedium machine guns are usually water-cooled weapons mounted on large tripods or mounts. These could fire massive quantities of bullets for a sustained period but were not easily mobile. Generally used for defense, rather than offense.

bulletHeavy machine guns were support weapons that had great range and penetration but were difficult to move and unwieldy. Heavy machine guns are primarily used for anti-aircraft.

The Social History of the Machine Gun Fascinating combination of history and analysis, viewing how the invention of machine gun changes modern warfare. Covers early developments of the weapon and field use. The WWI chapters are especially chilling as the author shows the high cost paid for the military strategists failure to comprehend what the machine gun meant in terms of killing power. Includes dozens of pictures and illustrations. Emphasis is on WWI, but also includes some WWII information. If you're looking for a technical reference, this book isn't for you. If you want the human dimension of war and how it is effected by the machine gun, you can't do better this. Absolutely fascinating reading!
