Jealousy and alcoholism takes a toll on the married owners of a small-time tour bus company in this tale taken from a John Steinbeck story. Their problems come to a boiling point and a tropical storm forces hasty decisions upon these two star-crossed lovers. There are several hair-raising moments as the intrepid Mr. Chicoy maneuvers his wayward bus through landslides, raging waters and hairpin mountain turns. A thoroughly enjoyable movie with an ending that had me cheering with tears in my eye.
Solid performances are what really make this movie. The main character, Johnny Chicoy, a half Mexican, half Irish, bus driver/mechanic, is sensitively portrayed by Rick Jason, the same actor who would later go on to star in the 5-year hit TV series "Combat!" (1961-67). Mr. Jason finely balances his conflicted character's emotions.
Joan Collins is very effective as Johnny's unhappy, alcoholic wife and owner of the ‘Rebel Corners’ bus stop and restaurant. I feel that Mrs. Chicoy's motives were not as well explained, so it's harder to sympathize with her behavior. But Ms. Collins does a good job and I for one came away believing that there was hope for this unhappy couple.
Jane Mansfield gives a surprisingly low-keyed performance as the hard-bitten call girl that still dreams of love and marriage. Dan Daily, her suitor, gives her as good as he gets. Both are well matched to their roles.
Well worth watching, though difficult to find.

I just watched this movie and I loved it! Great movie with excellant acting by all the stars. I agree with all of your comments totally, HWC! Rick gives a heartfelt performance in what could have been a very dull movie. It's a lot of fun to see the Combat cast playing different roles other than their Combat character. Good stuff you Gil's Gals!

Sorry folks about the error in the dates I gave - '61? That's off by a whole year. I put this review in the IMdB and now I've got to go through H*ll and High Water (pun intended) to correct the error. Well it's high ho, off to IMdB I go. So long from your friendly 349th
