The use of captured enemy vehicles did happen during the war. The vehicles were usually re-painted with the user's colors & insignia. Even captured aircraft was know to have been used by the captor.

If I remember correctly, the German sargeant pointed out that he was an Afrika Korps veteran and that the Saunders also had an Afrika Korps service ribbon on his uniform (the previous owner was an Afrika Korps vet)
