THE LEADER is a top-notch episode in every way. When Saunders needs to go back to the CP for a while, he leaves Kirby in charge. Caje is seriously wounded and delirious. At first, only Doc and Littlejohn are supportive, when Kirby is required to make life or death decisions. The episode is one of the darkest in the series. Many scenes show only a hint of an actor's face, and we must rely on voice recognition. I'd guess this was a successful attempt at realism: out in the field there are no street lights. The episode becomes very violent when two men sent by Kirby to check the phone line are attacked, and later when the platoon comes under heavy enemy fire. All the acting is impressive, but Jack Hogan again proves in THE LEADER that he may have been the best actor on the show. He gives a great performance: conflicted, frightened, regretful, and ultimately incredibly brave. Whatever you do, don't miss out on THE LEADER.
