The first time I saw a man cry on TV was when Vic Morrow cried in "The Little
Carousel" I was stunned!!! Tough soldiers weren't supposed to cry! At least not in my
then adolesent view. I also have memories of the Richard Basehardt episode when he
tortures "Gates". I remember Gates' screams thru the door...even today. |
Comments about the web site or other comments:
When I saw "Saving Private Ryan" I was asked by a friend what I thought, I
replied that all "Ryan" needed was Vic morrow and Rick Jason and you would have
a great episode of Combat!!! |

When did you first watch COMBAT?:
during first run, way back when... and occasionally caught it on Bravo, when a motel I was
in aired it... |
Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
I grew up in France of the early sixties, until President DeGaulle kicked the army
out...when my family returned to the states in 1964 Combat was the show of the week for
all of us army brats living at Fort Hood, Texas; we would watch the show, sometimes in
groups, and then go out and play it all over again!!! (go figure!)...also, because I spoke
French fluently, I or one of my siblings would get to translate the lines Caje read before
the show told us what they meant...also this meant that one of us would portray Caje when
we played the game outside in the dusty and hilly area of rural Ft. Hood...I grew up
loving the army, and this was my way of "playing" war |
Share any COMBAT memories you might have.:
I loved almost all of the episodes, although I thought some of them were sophomoric...but
I own most of them, I was able to tape them (I don't know how good they are now, they are
many years old!) this is still the greatest show ever produced (in my opinion!!!) I fell
in love (at age eight) with Jack Hogan, and still am! |

Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
The story of the folks who saved this world from the evils of the Axis powers as my Dad
and others had done for real. Can't do enough for the vets. This show told a great story
with each episode, well acted, and did honor to those who had served. I applaud all those
who were connected with the making of Combat! Job Well Do |

I don't have any favorite characters for I always loved them all. I did like Kirby's
B.A.R. though, and always wanted one. Saunder's Thompson was really good too! I loved the
soundtrack to the show. The theme song stuck with you like a top hit son |
Comments about the web site or other comments:
I hope that Columbia House, or one like them, will release all, or near all, the episodes
on video. It was one of the best shows on T.V |

When did you first watch COMBAT?:
about three months ago when my cable company upgraded and I got the Action channel. |
Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
The stories are so well written, and even the ones that are a little silly or sad have
some worthwhile moments. I have not found a truly "bad" episode yet. The actors
are so superb as are the characters. Kirby cracks me up. I wish Hanley and Saunders had
more scenes together. I just saw "A Day in June," and the moments between the
two are priceless. My favorite character, and it is a tough race between all the regulars,
is Saunders. I love the way he "fathers" his men and yet gets the job, any job,
done. |
Share any COMBAT memories you might have.:
Well, I was born two years after the series ended. I remember the opening credits though
(the show must have been in syndication) and I am a little ashamed to admit that I would
groan when I saw the bayonets and faces, turn off the tv and go play with my dolls. |
Comments about the web site or other comments:
I turned on Combat when I saw the Action channel carried it because I remembered my father
mentioning it. I remember when Vic Morrow died that my father was very upset. My own
father died two years later. Watching Combat, and loving it as much as I do, makes me feel
very close to my father. |

Looking for videos and finding a few is really the time I realized how great the show is.
This started around 1989 although I saw a show or two back in the 70's. |
Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
Great show, it's as simple as that! Best war television show ever, with "Tour of
Duty" right up there with it. Today's TV just can't come up with anything near the
shows of this period! (1958- 1970) |
Share any COMBAT memories you might have.:
I love the blast of the German Schmiessers! Also the short bursts from the Thompson. The
German "semi-auto" rifle is neat, too. I think it is the Gewr 41 or Gewr 43? It
would have been neat to have seen Kirby use his BAR tripod once or twice. Also, I think a
platoon had a .30 caliber set-up or two, and I would like to have seen them more often.
(like in "Hills Are For Heroes". But I should realize that the story is the main
thing on the producer's mind! |
Comments about the web site or other comments:
I just wanted to comment on the "ammo pouch" questions that I saw on the fan
comment line. In my opinion saunders should have worn a 5 magazine (20 round Mags) pouch
on his belt. The "bulky" pouch he wore in early shows, which is kind of a
universal pouch was good and I wish he kept it throughout the show. He could have just
filled it with paper and it would not have been very uncomfortable! The 5- mag pouch for
the Thompson can be seen in the movie about Audie Murphy, "To Hell And Back"
quite nicely. I think that every German I saw with a MP 38 0r MP40 (Schmiesser) always had
2 pouchs (3 mags in each) on, which was nice to see. Also, the rest of the men seem to
have "empty" cartridge belts, that is, each pouch is collapsed. Again, some
paper filler would have worked. The bandoleers worn over their shoulders in a couple of
shows looked good and I wish they had kept that up throughout the show. A BAR 3-pouch
bandoleer also would have been good too. Lastly, the grenades! As heavy as I believe they
are, "John Wayneing" them on their shoulder straps with them apparently hanging
by the "spoon" part is rather risky! |

Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
Its realism makes you feel intelligent. I can understand the german dialogue and the
french dialogue. (Caje is only a fair interpreter at best, by the way, but that's okay,
he's only a grunt). These men formed a group that really cares about each other and you
feel as if, thrown in with them , they would care for you also. Vic Morrow always found a
way to bring viewers into the Saunders soul. |
Share any COMBAT memories you might have.:
My husband, who spent 11 years in the armed forces, and snores through most films and tv
shows, sat and watched all of the Combat eps attentively. I can still hear the spontaneous
reactions to some of the dialogues, particularly Hanley's use of diplomacy in delicate
situations or Kirby's tirade on the hill. These always hit exactly the right notes. |
Comments about the web site or other comments:
I have grown up watching many different television shows, and believed I knew most of what
was out there. But I recently found this particular one which resembles absolutely nothing
else. Black and white! Must be old. Must be boring and passe. Wrong! The feelings,
emotions and psychology of the characters ring truer than dramas of today. Thanks. Thanks
to all of those people in front of and behind the cameras of Combat for always finding a
way of providing something for the right brain, something for the left brain and something
for the heart. |

The sound track is great and I want to see a heros and patriotism that is not popular
today due to the main stream media and other factors related. Im sure glad Saving Privot
Ryan was a sucess. We need to remember our past or we are bound to repeat it in the future
as Winston Churchhill said. I dont even subscribe to cable or satelite because it lacks
much of the older tv shows did for me.Vidio tapes and the internet suit me fine.Im not a
old geezer yet, Im 48 years of age and never in the military. |

My husband turned me on to Combat! about 10 years ago. I stayed up late every night to
tape and bleep out commercials for him and got hooked. All our tapes burned up when our
house burned down but we now get Encore action and I can tape two episodes every day. I am
one happy civilian now. |
Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
So many reasons-the quality of the show (especially the BW years), all the great guest
stars and the fact that Sarge is almost a dead ringer for my dad who served 5 years in the
army infantry (1940-1945). Although my dad served in the Pacific Theater, many of his
experiences mirror those of the White Rook Squad. And who wouldn't be sucked in by the
Chipster's winning ways? I'd be bad just to hear him say "YOU GOT IT?" |
Share any COMBAT memories you might have.:
Watching a classic episode like "The Duel" for the first time and wondering why
the Germans, upon seeing that Sarge was fighting for the Allies, didn't just give up and
save themselves a few hundred (thousand?)casualties. My husband and I have a whole
vocabulary built around Combat!and can always identify people our age who have watched the
show. Just mention Combat! and you will see the eyes of baby boomers light up when they
think of Sarge. |

When did you first watch COMBAT?:
During the early 1970's (reruns on channel 5, Wash. DC). It came on late at night. |
Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
Much like other fans, the action scenes, differing gun sounds, etc. The "basic"
group of Germans shooting at Hanley and Saunders and the rest of the squad, pinned down. I
like the equipment very much and used to "collect" web gear and such. One thing
that bugs me alot is how the "Thompson" and "Schmeiser(?)" keep on
firing without the user changing magazines, and Sgt. Saunders' equipment belt having no
Thompson magazine ammo pouch, except in some early scenes in early shows. |
Share any COMBAT memories you might have.:
I just wish some TV channel in my area would wise up and show the show!! I faintly
remember one show where the US men are pinned down in some kind of building and a scarred
guy jumps up, runs out, down a sewer?, and "saves the day". |

Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
The gun battles and the true grit of the American combat soldier portrayed in the show
during the 60's. Plus they always won in the end, The dramatic and superb acting of the
stars. Plus the fantastic way the Germans always got killed. Yuo always knew that a guest
star always get's it in the end as a dead man or hero. |
Share any COMBAT memories you might have.:
The one with Sgt. Saunders vs a "German" tank, The jeeps with Telly Savalas. The
score and soundtrack is what I can never forget and the sound of the different weapons
from American and German. The best was when Vyc Morrow came for a visit to the Philippines
and he was welcome in a motorcade around Manila like a national Hero. The next year was
Rick Jason who was also given a hero's welcome. Both appear in Philippine television as
guest for an interview, which I will never forget and were in Philippines tv and newspaper
headlines. Never failed to miss an episode. |

Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
I enjoyed it because of an early and intense interest in military and American history. I
shared this interest with my father. He was a veteran of both WWII and Korea; so alongwith
my other abiding passion of baseball, I knew that would be time I'd get to spend with him. |

I remember vividly being able to take my supper plate into the family room at 6:30 P.M.
(CST) on Tuesday nights to watch COMBAT! My sister had the same priviledge with
"Bewitched". I just remember enjoying watching TV with my dad. Three episodes
stick out in my mind the most. The one where James Coburn guest-starred (just after
watching him in the Magnificent Seven two nights before); the episode where Beau Bridges
guest-starred as a botanist with the ability to discern abnormalities in camouflage, but
was a coward at heart; and the episode where Tab Hunter starred as an ex-baseball player
who threw grenades like a pitcher. |

Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
I am a WWII History buff; have been since I was 7 years old in 1962 when I watched it for
the first time. Combat! showed the perspective of the common foot solider which you don't
always get with WWII drama (with the excpetion of today's Saving Pvt. Ryan). I think
Combat! is responsible for me being a WWII reenactor and militaria collector. |

I have not seen an episode of Combat! since 1967. The epidode I remember the most is the
one were Sgt. Sanders is pretending to be a deaf german grunt. The other one I remember is
the one where some poor GI is hanging next to a tree, wounded, and the Krauts are using
him as bait to get the rest of the squad. They try all night and finially get him the next
day. His only response is "what took so long". |

I cannot remember exactly when my brother and I started watching the show, I think around
the early 80ies, most of what I remember is that we could only watch on none school nights
or sneak out of our rooms to watch it, and then turn the volume way down not to wake up
mom and dad.I do not recall seeing very many episodes, I guess the one that stands out in
my memory is "Hills are for heros". To this day I am still looking for this
program somware on tv. |
Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
It is hard to say why, at that time my older brother was really into WW2 history in school
and I just caught that interest and learned from him.Ever since then my patriatism and
interst in "why we are free" has grown and grown. As young as we were shows like
this showed us why we are free and that we should never forget those who paid dearly for
the freedoms that we enjoy today! In answering the question in this heading I would have
to say we enjoyed it because of what it stood for. |

As a kid I watched reruns with my dad on a local tv station. I first remember it on
Sundays at 11pm and thus could only watch it if I didn't have school or didn't have to go
to the babysitter's the next day. It was eventually picked up by another station that
played it on Saturday afternoons. |
Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
I've always had an interest in WWII. As a kid I had the misguided impression that war was
glamorous. History, especially American history still is one of my favorite interests. I
no longer have any misguided beliefs about war, but I do still enjoy reading or watching
stories about the men who served (both of my grandfathers served in the South Pacific
during WWII). I have nothing but respect for men (and women) who risked everything to
basically allow me to have the freedom I have today (although that is under siege in this
current day and age, and unfortunately the enemy isn't always a foreign threat). I have
always felt "Combat" paid a great tribute to the men who put their lives on the
line to defeat a vicious and evil enemy. It is also realistic without showing all the
atrocities of war (such as "Saving Private Ryan"). It is possible to make a
statement about the perils of war without actually showing them (like people getting
disembowled, beheaded, and so on). |

Actually none. I'm 28, didn't serve in the military and thus was never sent to Saudi

original airings, I do enjoy seeing who has been on it and thus went on to make a bigger
name for themselves (Robert Duvall, Tom Skerritt, Dennis Hopper just to name a few). Kirby
just cracks me up and yet Jack Hogan could also play the part very seriously when
necessary. I just watched "The First Day" and Kirby is sent to check for
landmines with a knife. As he heads out, one of the 18 year olds tells him to "be
careful." Kirby looks at him, then Saunders, Caje, and Doc. The look he gave was just
hysterical. I don't remember the name of the episode, but it is one of the latter ones (it
was in color) and Saunders goes to England to give some money to a woman who runs an
orphanage. The money was from one of his squad members who was killed earlier in the show.
The short version was the lady was killed when she was caught in the building during a V2
attack. Saunders goes in to look for her and stops and looks to be in a bit of shock when
finding her. You know how she probably looked at that point, but it is left to the viewer
to figure it out. Nowadays, even on tv, she probably would have been shown. My wife even
watched that episode with me (the whole thing- normally it's just off and on). Very
tastefully done). |

When did you first watch COMBAT?:
I remember watching the original shows in the 1960s (I was somewhere between the
ages of five and eight) but for the most part I remember watching the shows in syndication
in the 1970s (?) and 1980s. Like many young boys who grew up in the
mid-1960s, I remember playing army with the older kids in the
neighborhood (we may have called it playing guns). The older boys would refer
to the actors in the show and call themselves by all those familiar names (Hanley,
Saunders, Caje, Kirby, and Littlejohn). The older kids would sometimes argue about who
would get to be Saunders, Caje, etc. I had the inside track on the name Littlejohn. I also
remember having the board game COMBAT! and an original (1964?) GI Joe. Great memories. |
Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
These one-hour television programs are without question some of the finest examples of
filmmaking. I watch each show as if Im watching a one-hour movie. The stories,
production, acting, and direction are all superb. The Robert Altman directed episodes are
great. I am continually amazed by the story lines. The human elements of the shows are so
real and so compelling that I am often moved. I remember watching most episodes, nervous
and on the edge of my seat, worried about whether or not everyone would be okay at the end
of the hour. Now thats compelling television. I also enjoy COMBAT! because I am
interested in WW II history and military logistics and strategy. |

Vic Morrow was a truly talented and gifted actor who played the role as if he werent
acting at all. The same thing can be said for the rest of the cast. |

When I was 11 I loved the squad members, the action, the music, the krauts getting shot

weekly installment. |

I love the fact that the stories hold up even after 30 years. Combat is a show about war
and how horrible it can be. It's a show about people and personalities. It's action,
drama, adventure. It's a show that when I viewed it as an adult, I still went wow!, or Oh
no! What more can you ask from a show? |

During the early eighties, the show aired every weeknight at 10pm on a small local

Combat! have been inspirations for some of our game scenarios, most notably "Anatomy

Comments about the web site or other comments:
Like many others I'm sure, I would love to see a full length motion picture made of my
all-time favorite television show, but I'm afraid I'd be a tough critic. The original cast
had a quality and chemistry that was obviously special, unique and one-of-a-kind.
Hollywood is just bound to screw it up. Look at the botched job it did on "The Thin
Red Line." That was a terrific book and story, but Hollywood ruined what should have
been a great movie. |

Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
Above all else, I enjoyed the cinematography of the show. Mr.Kennedy and the others did an
excellent job of "placing" the viewer in the action with the guys of K company.
The writing was strong as well. In particular, the episode with John Casavettes being
accused of performing an s.i.w. was one of the best COMBAT! shows I've ever seen. And, of
course, the portrayal of Sgt. Saunders by Vic Morrow was flawless. |

I guess being a military bratt, you become more in tuned to watching war movies. I
personally think that Combat was the best long running drama ever produced in 1962, think
about it, It ran for 5 years successfully talkiing about the same subject, no other drama
can lay claim to that. The actors were great with what dialogue they were offered. I
personally think that the cast, Rick and Vic Morrow and the others got the shaft and were
thrown over for Garrison's Gorrillas, a simple war series that went nowhere. Keep the
faith, Rick, I still believe in you. |

surface like deja "View!" as I'd say to myself hey I do really remeber this

wandewrings seperated from the rest of gang. The great in shock trauma acting of Vic's his
attempts to use river water and mud to help the healing process, and his attempts to snare
an apple from that tree in the orchard. Of course I never got to see the colour season

the forces, 3 mths of basic ie army style (compulsory for all able bodied singaporean
18yo) but I ended up 8 yrs in the navy. And recently it occured to me that combat was the
reason for what occurred to me for the good part of my life and here I am,looking for some
nostalgia on vcd or something, havent gone thru yr site but i hope anything is not

Like most kids my age back than my dad served in the U.S. Army during WWII and he shared
some stories and his scrapbook of his duty while stationed in Italy in 44/45. Always been
interested in war stuff as far back as I can remember. Had plastic army men, complete with
tanks and halftracks. But never a G.I. Joe, that was for sissies I thought..dolls aahhhh.
Read about the Battle of the Solomons when I was about nine. Enlisted in the Air Force
after high school and went and saw Saving Private Ryan like four times. Even wrote a short
novel (unpublished) about a German soldier trying to survive in the midst of Stalingrad. |

Back in the early sixties our family only had one tv. This big metal cased Zeneith. I
remember Combat came on Tuesday nights at around 8:00pm. But this clashed with my older
sister who insisted she wanted to watch Mr. Novack instead. So at times there was real
combat in our living room on tuesday nights! So we compromised and started alternating
each week. So I missed many episodes back then. Recently I started getting the
Encore\Action channel and now after all of this years I get to watch Combat! without any
interruptions. Kirby with that BAR was my favorite, he looked so cool under fire. |

opinion, this episode is just as gripping as Saving Private Ryan or any other war show.
I'm glad to hear that a movie is coming out and I can't wait to watch it. My favorite

years ago, while looking for something decent for my sons to watch on tv, i found shows
like 12 o'clock high and combat! i thought they were shows that portrayed men that i would
like my sons to emulate. well, not only did i become a fan, but so did all five of my
boys! in fact, my two older sons are both in the military and the three younger ones are
planning military careers. my oldest son joined the army 2 years ago. my second son just
graduated from marine boot camp. when asked why they joined the military, both say that
someone has to be willing to stand up and fight for freedom, and since they are capable of
doing that, it is their duty to do it. each of them credits some of their devotion to duty
and honor to watching combat. the characters of saunders, hanley and the rest showed them
men who were willing to go the last mile for something that was right. and that there are
things worth dying for. |

When did you first watch COMBAT?:
When it first aired, as a young boy. It was a popular show in our house, as was (later) 12
O'Clock High and war/action movies in general. All of the kids in the neighborhood watched
the show, as most of our fathers were veterans of WWII, and we were transitioning from
playing cowboys to playing army. My friends and I would play on the sets in the hills and
on the movie lots of the San Fernando Valley. It's really amazing how many Eucalyptus
trees there are in France! |
Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
Living amongst veterans of WWII, the show opened up the whole world of living history to
me. It sparked a lifelong deep interest in all aspects of WWII and military history in
general. At the time, we loved the stories and actions depicted far more than the John
Wayne propaganda of the '50s. So many of the shows focused our attention on the realities
of armed conflict, even though we couldn't see the gore, and feel the terror. Now I like
to watch the show and note the bloopers regarding weaponry (Krauts attacking with
French/British tanks, P-47's, P-51's, american tanks and half tracks, etc., didn't they
have any good archival footage?) and filmcraft, yet I also greatly enjoy the acting craft
displayed by the cast. There are also many moments of superb direction. Watching the guest
stars early on in their careers is interesting, as many of them exhibit their respective
talents which we now accept as commonplace. My sons now watch the show and are attracted
by the music and dramatic stories, just as I was long ago. |
Share any COMBAT memories you might have.:
There are so many and this site encompasses much of the feeling this series conveys. I
agree with many fans that Hills are For Heroes is one of the best episodes vis a vis
realism. Forgotten Front - Did he or didn't he shoot the Kraut? Jeffery Hunter is superb
in Lost Sheep, Lost Shepard & Eddie Arnold as the Doughboy. Many of the Altman
episodes are fantastic, such as Survival (very similar to Hear No Evil)which shows
Morrow's exemplary talent as does Cat and Mouse - the ending with Saunders dressing down
the officers with the now useless report. Which episode is the one where he awakes by a
German hospital train feigning shock? Sees the rifles' shadow? Is "Dummstuck"
when the Kraut squads tries to help him? Lots of twists and turns in that one. Caje skiing
down the mountain in the only winter episode. Anatomy of a Patrol with James Caan -
classic combat firefights and close encounters in the woods. Counter Punch depicting the
"Fog of War" (though the end is a bit lame). Two of Duvalls', The Enemy &
Cry for Help. Two episodes truely depict the germans as a dangerous opponent, One At a
Time with the sniper taking revenge for the death of his squad, and Cry in the Ruins -
which is one of the most realistic depictions of the enemy, is he so like us Lieutenant
Hanley?. Though the Duel has some good moments, aerial shots, and the concept, I have to
ask once again, couldn't they ever find any real kraut armor? |
Comments about the web site or other comments:
There are several episodes which I see as direct adaptations of other movies. Many people
think of Hell is for Heroes when viewing Hills are for Heroes, though I believe this is
not a good example. Try these...The Medal - shades of Audie Murphy in To Hell and
Back?...A Childs Game - The Bridge? Heritage, with a superb Charles Bronson, - reminds me
of a later film Castle Keep. One final comment on Vic Morrow and his inate acting ability.
Should you ever have the chance to see Men At War, check it out. I like to recall the
vision of the smiling, scared private, with flowers adorning his dead sergeants' bloody
helmet...and see the future Chip Saunders. |

I have always been interested in military things. I grew up listening to my dad, uncles

and gave a fairly accurate idea of how the army operated. I liked Cage and Kirby best.
Kirby evolved to a more likeable character as the show progressed. Saunders was the kind
of NCO I wished I had when I was in the army. |
Share any COMBAT memories you might have.:
When serving in Vietnam, I heard the Combat them music playing while walking down the
street in Pleiku. The Vietnamese civilians were watching the show on armed forces TV. My
favorite scene was between Caje and Saunders, after they had escaped from a mill and had
to leave a German prisoner behind. Caje admitted to Saunders that he could not kill the
prisoner. It showed that he still had a streak of humanity in his heart, something a
combat soldier has to hang on to. |

scenes, the affects are great for its time! My favourite episodes are "Hills are for
heroes" and the coloured episodes. |

No not at all! Because I'm only 13 years old. But thats how I I got my email address name
from Combat "laffenhaffen!" I sometimes draw my own personal pictures from the
show Combat, I like to draw scenes I could remember from the current episodes I saw. |
Comments about the web site or other comments:
I had no idea that theres such thing as a Combat website! I thought it was a less popular
show to everyone, I felt alone watching Combat thinking I'm the only one watching. My
friends would make fun of me because I'm watching an 1960's show but I don't. Above all I
think its a great website! |

When did you first watch COMBAT?:
Last year, maybe early september. I had just returned from Cold Lake, and my friend and I
went to see Saving Private Ryan. I had enjoyed it so much that I began checking out other
WWII stuff. I found Combat! on History Television. I watched it every day, sometimes
twice. |
Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
I enjoy Combat! for a number of reasons. One, it's entertaining. Two, it gives a slightly
more accurate portrayal of what went on than other shows which are concerned mainly with
action, instead of actual plots. I have many other reasons for wathing, but they are
inexplicable. |
Share any COMBAT memories you might have.:
Hills Are For Heroes is probably my favorite episode(s). I taped any episodes that struck
me as well-done, and this was one of them. They squad struggled to take the hill. Men kept
dying. The tank was destryed, and yet they kept at it, as per orders. When they finally
succeded in the mission, the order came to pull back. This, to me, showed the futility of
war as a whole. |

When did you first watch COMBAT?:
In 1962, when I was 9 years old. |
Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
The stories were fantastic. When I was a boy, I loved the firefights, but later I realized
how great the human drama was. The chemistry among the cast came through. Great direction,
writing, makeup, special effects. Some wonderful guest stars. Vic Morrow, Jack Hogan, and
Pierre Jalbert were my favorites of the regulars, but really I loved the entire cast. The
show had some kind of deep affect on me. In college I majored in German and French. |
Share any COMBAT memories you might have.:
Two things. First, what a lot of people did who were kids when the show was on: I played
army after watching the episodes, making Saunders' tommy-gun noise and Kirby's BAR noise
and Caje's rifle noise with my mouth. Although I couldn't speak German then, when I
pretended I was attacked, I would yell: "Amerikaner! Feuer!" The other memory
was a Tuesday night in Sept, 1967. I turned on the TV, expecting to see the 1st new
episode of the 6th season, not knowing the run of the show was over. Rat Patrol had taken
Combat's spot. I turned all my anger and sadness on to Rat Patrol, blamed it for the
demise of Combat. Never watched a single episode of Rat Patrol. Sounds crazy now but I
loved Combat so much, and I was only 14 at the time. |

Being a WWII history buff, it's a natural for me! I think the characters are fantastic and

to be a moral in each episode. |

When did you first watch COMBAT?:
From the very first episode in 1962. Have been watching the re-runs on the History Channel
(Canada). |
Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
I was born during WWII in London and grew up listening to my parents and their friends
talking about their experiences during the war. I think that is why I have always been
fascinated with military history. Along with my sisters and friends I used to play
"war games" on the bomb sites around our house. I enjoyed Combat! for the action
and realistic depiction of the life of the WWII solder, but mostly because of the basic
decency and courage of the squad members and the friendships they formed with each other. |

I waited all week for Tuesday evening's episode of Combat! and hated to see the hour end,

have stayed with me for 32 years now and I have always wondered what had happened to the
cast members. |

Basically, Sgt. Saunders was my hero. I had a toy Thompson, (actually I had 3), and I

Me and my brother, Kyle, simply loved the show. We hardly ever played sports, we prefered

with "died right", you had to be realistic, like the show. |

I hadn't seen any episodes since the 60's, a friend recently made me a 6 hour VHS tape off

The characters, the regular characters. The guest stars always add something to the show,

When it first aired. I was just a kid but I can remember even back then being glued to the

Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
The show has a humanity and an intelligence and a compassion that are seldom seen in
television today. The characters are strong but with real human frailties. The chemistry
and rapport between the actors shines through in every scene. Vic Morrow and Rick Jason
were incredible, and Kirby, Littlejohn, sentimental Caje, Doc, Billy--I just loved them
all! |

The show aired again in the mid-1980's here in Chicago. I hadn't seen it since I was
little. It was like discovering a box of gold in the attic! Each episode seemed fresh and
brought back memories of my youth. Actually, my youngest daughter was undergoing a series
of difficult heart surgeries at this time and believe it or not, Combat helped me through
some long nights. Watching these guys deal honorably with life and death issues helped me
deal with some of the difficult issues I was going through. I will always be grateful to
all the creative people involved with Combat--the series always has and always will mean a
lot to me. |

When did you first watch COMBAT?:
When I was a child. It was an instant hit with us. I came from a long line of veterans.
Our combined families had family members that served in all branches, except coast guard.
It was a realistic show, for the ETO in WWII. |
Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
They were regular guys before the war. American citizen soldiers are the finest in the
world. We have a rich heritage. It was the everyday footslogger that was the real hero of
the war. Like the guys in the squad. I think they really represented the average GI. The
show incorporated all the elements of good drama. A far cry from the garbage that passes
today for legitimate TV. |
Share any COMBAT memories you might have.:
As children, we emulated the characters from the show, in our play, and deportment. We
played war using squad tactics and flanking. We learned many things that actually helped
us later when we got into the real Army. We reloaded, we took wounded. We had commo. We
took saunder's advice and didn't try to be a hero. During a twenty yeat career as a
uniformed patrol officer, I gave that advice often! One of my favorite lines was when
saunders told someone"you stay put!" They looked tired and worn, they looked
like they were in a war. My son and I now watch the show, he wants to attend West Point,
and we laugh about how saunders fought his way across the whole ETO on one 20 roung
magazine! But this is a good natured jab. I have seen him change magazines. I love the
shoe and think it contributed to my character development. |

Thx for answering me after I vented my spleen to the History Channel (canada). I just got
an answer from them saying that they'll be bringing back "Combat!" sometime next
year. They seem to be convinced that this BBC "Colditz" is a 'decent
replacement' -- that's akin to saying a 2-wheel tricycle is a good replacement for the
space shuttle!! Another excuse they gave was that even though they hold the broadcast
rights to "Combat!" there's only 150 episodes in the series. Oh yeah? how many
reruns of "It Seems Like Yesterday" have we had to suffer through since 1997?!
I'm feverently praying the email was from a brain-dead summer trainee, because once this
turkey "Colditz" airs, HC's ratings will drop like a proverbial stone! Hang in
there! |

Began watching Combat from the very first episode. Each Tuesday night the whole family
gathered to watch it. It was a family ritual through the entire run of the series. |
Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
I enjoyed Combat for its action, drama and accurate portrayal of men in battle (or at
least as accurate as television producers and sponsors would allow at the time). Most of
all I enjoyed Combat because of the no nonsense but tender-hearted Sgt. Chip Saunders. Any
boy of eight-years-old in my neighbor hood who was ready to play war wanted the ol' sarge
on our side. |

The Christmas Eve episode from 1963 entitled "The Party" stands out. Although it
was atypical for a Combat episode, too much humor and not enough action for my young
taste, it was also the day I got my first GI Joe as an early Christmas present because I
was ill and my mother couldn't bear to see me so miserable. "Survival" from
earlier that same year also stands out. I remember it as also atypical for Combat but was
very impressed by the acting and pacing for my young age. Didn't this episode win an Emmy
for Combat? |

I vividly remember the opening music and the Shot/blasts in the begining of the show.
Also! I remember the differences between the sounds of the German rifles and how they were
so different from the American M-1 Garand when the rounds are fired. I think the German
rifles sounded somthing like (DOO CHEE,DOO CHEE) Not too bad for a memorie from 1965. HA!!
I eventually Joined the US Army and went into Infantary, BOY!! was I in for a shock!. I
had the greatest time in the Infantry, because there was no war at the time,(mid 1970s).

Very first episode in 1962. I was 9. |

My dad was a WWII vet who was wounded in France, 1944. I have always been in awe of such a
huge global event as WWII. |

I and all the other kids on the block would talk about the show the next day and of course
when we played army, we would argue over who got to be Saunders. Kirby was the second most
popular character to play. After that no one cared; if you weren't Saunders or Kirby, you
were nobody. |

When did you first watch COMBAT?:
Back in '62, when it first arrived on TV. I was just a little seven year old snotnose, and
I watched it with my father. My sisters and mother apparently wanted no part of it, but we
macho guys just loved watching war stuff. |
Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
Probably because it brings back a moment of primal pleasure and vitality to me,
remembering a time when all was possible and everything was safe. Plus, purely on an
objective basis, I love the mood the show conveys, with its stark black and white and
various camera angles. While occasionally a bit wooden and dated, I overall find the cast
performances great even to this day. |

Nothing ultra special here, other than what I said above. I believe it was Tuesday nights,
back in the early to mid 1960s, 8:30-9:30 - it was COMBAT! time. Nobody dared to insinuate
anything else to me or my old man. I remember being real pissed off on the summer even if
I missed a rerun when I plyed little league. I got to see it for a while again when my
cable provider carried the Nostalgia channel. In fact, I even taped a few episodes, and
then the "bastages" took it off the air. I'm VERY disappointed now because it's
nowhere to be found now on my cable system. Well, hopefully someday soon. |

When I was about eleven years old. |
Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
It was so unlike any other series on television. My father was a WWII veteran: a sergeant
in the 9th Air Force often on detached duty. He was in England, France, Belgium, and
Holland as a mechanic working on B-26s. He filled my ears with many stories that I never
forgot. |

The best memories are of watching the show with my brothers and Dad. He often had a
comment about something that was going on. He even remembered some of the French that was
spoken, so it really brought the episodes to life. |
Comments about the web site or other comments:
The casting was perfect. Each character was gradually developed by the actors. You felt
these men really cared about each other. This is one of my favorite web sites. It is a
pleasure to see one done so well and periodically updated. |

Because of the characters and the way they blended together much as a real squad would do.
This was a very realistic series since the Germans actually spoke German and did not hold

wars. It actually shows you how the men in war feel and how they deal with the hardships

Its best episodes show integrity and intelligence that I find lacking in most television

It was very hard to arrange to see COMBAT when I was a kid. My parents didn't think it was
suitable for a girl to watch. I had to arrange all sorts of wild schemes to see it. Only
managed to view a few episodes, but those included "Survival" and
"Odyssey". I think my ideas about what makes good drama were effected by those
episodes. It is ironic that in the eighties when they had COMBAT reruns - I had thrown out
my old TV set because I found the current TV shows so disappointing. Not long ago I got
digital Cable and so began to watch COMBAT on the Encore action channel. |

When did you first watch COMBAT?:
When they first came out in the sixties on abc tv. I was born in 1960, so this show had a
very strong impression on me. Yes, I started at 5 & 6 yrs. old. |
Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
A psychologist once told me people watch war flicks to feel empowered. Well, I suspect
there is some of that present when I watch even today (6-99) (on kdoc-tv), however I guess
it is the "believable, on the edge of my chair, gripping excitement" and war
drama. I cant watch things that are not believable or to far fetched. I also enjoy the
efforts at authenticity (uniforms, equipt., etc.)(they knew we were not dumb). Combat is
at or near the top shelf in this dept. Along this line, the Germans were made to look
formadable, etc. |
Share any COMBAT memories you might have.:
I think "Combat" had something to do with me joining the Marines instead of the
Navy or Air Force. As a child I played "guns" in the "woods" with
other kids. I of course pretended to be Sgt Saunders. We had squads, etc. I suspect I was
one of thousands doing this at that time. About the episodes, I enjoyed all episodes with
live armour in them (especially the one were Saunders single handedly destroys a German
tank & the one were they ride in a kraut tank behind German lines trying to get back
to allied lines). |

When History Chanel started running Combat! about 18 months ago, my brother was excited,
because he wanted me top tape the series for him. About a year ago they also started
running The Rat Patrol. Day and night. While Combat has stories that are for the mostpart
believable, The Rat Patrol is so exagerated that it is an insult the History Television
runs them one after another! |

In '64 we got cable. Since then have really enjoyed the re- runs. |
Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
I believe the high points of this series and the manner in which the episodes devolved;
were: the friendships that developed between the squad members and how they depended on
each other. Military training stresses that you must work as a team in combat situations,
and they do this in the show. |
Share any COMBAT memories you might have.:
When the show came on in the late sixties, my Father would snort, load his pipe, and say
" Here's your friend." We both laughed uproariously when, in the episode "
What Are The Bugles Blowin' For?", the British commissioned officer says " I
have decided to rescind the order keeping you and your squad here." Chip had a real
chuckle over it himself. |
Comments about the web site or other comments:
This show was sixties television programming at it's best. More than simply entertainment,
it allowed us a chance to share, however vicariously, an experience that does not readily
lend itself to film. I regret the fact that Vic was not able to continue as a director;
because filmdom's audience would quite likely have received some excellent viewing. |

Was always a "tom-boy" and loved playing with pine cone "hand
grenades" and gum tree branch "B.A.R.s". Audie Murphy was my first real
hero and Sgt. Saunders ran a close 2nd....always thought he could have won the war single
handed. Even as a 12 year old, I realized this was fine television programming; well
written, well directed and superbly acted. Have always used the show as a yardstick by
which to measure quality/content of others. |
Share any COMBAT memories you might have.:
Was the one TV show I could enjoy every Friday night with my dad. We always had heated
discussions about who really won the war...the Brits, the Yanks or the ANZACs. He always
made fun of the fact that Saunders et al always got shot but never croaked...I think Dad
was secretly envious of the Sarge. Dad was in the RAF during the post-war years, stationed
in the Middle East and didn't see action. Hmmm. |

Note to Arlene in Toronto: I thought I was the only one in Toronto still carrying a torch
for Vic!? Great to have some company. He was a terrific actor and, to use current
fan-speak, he was a real "hottie". But let's face it, the entire squad were
hunks and I found it difficult to choose between them and my 16 magazine pin-ups of the
Monkees!! Aaah, the innocence of youth. Many thanks to those responsible for this site.

When did you first watch COMBAT?:
I remember watching Combat! in 1965 when I was 11 years old. My mom and I used to watch it
together every week. |
Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
I like to watch it now because I can actually remember some of the episodes. It was a most
realistic show compared to some of the movies about WWII that were made. I like the idea
of the French and Germans actually speaking the language because it made the stories more
real. |

As a young girl of 11, I got my first real crush on an actor, watching Sergeant Saunders
(Vic Morrow). Watching the old shows brings those memories back. |

Watched it as a kid in the early sixties in Eldorado, Illinois. |
Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
Man, it was (and still is) the best TV show--realisitic, dramatic and well-acted. And
don't forget those Robert Allman-directed episodes! Great stuff. |

I'll NEVER forget seeing "Survival" when I was 8 years old. When I finally saw
it again years later it was just as good! |

When did you first watch COMBAT?:
Back in the early 60's when it first came out!!! |
Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
I always was intrigued by the military. It gives me a chance to reflect back on the the
1940's era of our history and helps me to understand why we really needed to join the war
against Germany and kick the oppressors out of France and the rest of Europe! |

I always liked the shows that have the artillery fire in them like "Barrage",
"What are the Bugles Blowin' For?", " The Librarian" and "Child
of Prague" to name just a few. |
Comments about the web site or other comments:
I also enjoyed Vic Morrow as an actor. He was the Sarge of ALL Sargents.!!!! |

When did you first watch COMBAT?:
KOMO-TV Seattle circa 1963. Reruns of the program weren't shown in Seattle until 1986.
They were run again briefly (black and white only) last year. |
Why do you enjoy COMBAT?:
As a kid, it made me understand about good and evil. It was a complement to "Sgt.
Fury" (read by the boys) and "Diary of Anne Frank" (read by the girls). |

In the 4th grade (1964-65) I used to walk home for lunch with one of the girls in my
class. On Wednesdays we would discuss the previous evening's Combat! episode. My mother
cried while watching the episode where the young girl (a student nurse) who saves Saunders
is later killed by a mine. This ran sometime around 1964 and I still remember my mom's
reaction. I saw the episode many years later as an adult and was moved by it. |

About the web site: Was wondering whatever became of Pierre Jalbert. Never knew if he was
really a Cajun or a Quebecker. Enjoyed the character sketches and the biographies of the
actual actors. |
